Specially Protected Areas in Poodří Protected Landscape Area

Polanský les Nature Reserve 1 - Alluvial Forest

Basic Information

Polanský les Nature Reserve lies on the left bank of the Oder River at the north edge of Poodří Protected Landscape Area in close proximity of the City of Ostrava in the cadastral district of Svinov Municipality. The altitude in the Reserve oscillates between 214 and 216 m. Its area of 59.17 ha has been protected since the year 1970. The subject of protection is a large alluvial forest in the Oder river floodplain with a network of old river arms, forest pools and diverse flora and fauna.

Alluvial Forest

One of the characteristics of an alluvial forest is the fact that it gets flooded irregularly by river overflows. This so-called “hard meadow” consists mainly of hard woody plants. Pendunculate oak (Quercus robur), Common ash (Fraxinus excelsior) and Small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) are dominating the territory. Scarce species of Common hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), Scottish maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) and Bird cherry (Prunus padus) can be also found here. Non-native species such as Locust tree (Robinia pseudacacia) are being gradually removed. The main goal of nature protection in this Reserve is to ensure an undisturbed development of the forest without forestry intervention. This does not apply to the south part of the Reserve where the pendunculate oak is grown on purpose as a gene reservoir for the area of Polanský les
