Kotvice nature reserve 4 - Forest
Basic information
Kotvice Nature Reserve lies on the right bank of the Oder river, between Nová Horka and Albrechtičky villages in Poodří Protected Landscape Area. This area, covering 105,48 hectares, was proclaimed a nature reserve in 1970 and was extended to its current from to 140,39 hectares in 2012. The subject of protection is a characteristic mosaic of species-rich ecosystems Poodří PLA and includes ponds with nesting islands and littorial vegetation, floodplain forests and oak-hornbeam forests with a higher proportion of dead wood, and flooded meadows with wetlands and pools.
Forest
Former castle game reserve has a character of a hard mead, a floddplain forest that is being flooded irregularly and for a short period of time during the Oder river and its tributary Sedlnice overflows. The English oak (Quercus robur), the Small-leaved Lime (Tilia cordata) and the Common Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) are trees typical for this forest. In the shrub layer, there prevails the Bird Cherry (Prunus padus). Extensive vegetation of blooming snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis), the Ramsons (Allium ursinum), blosoms of Pulmonaria obscura, Corydalis cava or the Yellow Anemone Anemone ranunculoides are predominant in the herbaceous underlayer in spring. The abundnce of old trees makes the forest an ideal place for birds nesting in cavities, such as the Middle Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos medius), the Collared Flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis), the Grey-headed Woodpecker (Picus canus), and so on. Cavities and holes of the old trees are also a summer shelter of a few bat species. The dead wood from fallen trees is left on the spot, creating a habitat of less common insect species or saprophytic fungi.
