Specially Protected Areas in Poodří Protected Landscape Area

Kotvice nature reserve 2 - Ponds and its bird species

Basic information

Kotvice Nature Reserve lies on the right bank of the Oder river, between Nová Horka and Albrechtičky villages in Poodří Protected Landscape Area. This area, covering 105,48 hectares, was proclaimed a nature reserve in 1970 and was extended to its current from to 140,39 hectares in 2012. The subject of protection is a characteristic mosaic of species-rich ecosystems Poodří PLA and includes ponds with nesting islands and littorial vegetation, floodplain forests and oak-hornbeam forests with a higher proportion of dead wood, and flooded meadows with wetlands and pools.

Ponds and its bird species

Ponds with extensive littorial vegetation and islands are an ideal place for life and reproduction of water birds. The critically endangered Eurasian Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), the Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), the highly endangered Great Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus), the Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus) and the Porzana (Porzana porzana) could be found nesting in the reed. The rare and highly endangered duck Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina) and the endangered Gadwall (Anas strepera) reproduce at the ponds. A few endangered species of the grebe family of water birds live and nest in this area. In spring, there can be heared a flute-like call of the Oriole, nesting high in the treetops. The Penduline Tit hangs its nests on overhanging willow branches. The Grey Heron flies from the nearby nesting colony to hunt at the ponds. Ponds are an important stop of migratory water birds, therefore many more birds, even very rare species, may be seen in the reserve during spring or autumn migration.
