Koryta Nature Reserve - Matters of interest

Basic information

Koryta Nature Reserve lies on the right bank of the Oder river, north from Batrošovice village in Poodří Protected Landscape Area. This area, covering 12,96 hectares, was proclaimed a nature reserve in 1998 in order to protect rare animal and plant species. The occurence of the following species was observed here: the Southern Adderstongue (Ophioglossum vulgatum), the Marsh Valerian (Valeriana simplicifolia), the snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) and the Ground Beetle Carabus variolosus. The Oder river terraces are covered with alluvial forests, dominated by alders (Alnus glutinosa).

Matters of interest

Koryta Nature Reserve is a natural habitat for the Southern Adderstongue Ophioglossum vulgatum, an interesting and by law protected plant, sometimes also called snake´s tongue. The plant has an only leave that is erected (5 – 15 cm high), consisting of the assimilation part (the leaf reminding of a tongue) and of a fertile part with spores of the shape of a punch. It grows on damp to wet meadows, pastures and in light forests. This plant is protected also in neighbouring Poland and Slovakia. The Marsh Valerian Valeriana simplicifolia is another rare species of wet meadows and infested forests, being a highly endangered species according to the red list.
