Specially Protected Areas in Poodří Protected Landscape Area

Bařiny Nature Reserve 1

Basic information

Bařiny Nature Reserve lies on the right bank of the Oder river between Kunín and Bernartice nad Odrou in the southern part of Poodří Protected Landscape Area. The area was proclaimed a reserve in 2002 and it covers 40,2 hectares. The main subject of protection is one part of the right side of the Oder river terrace with frequent springs and a complexity of mostly wetland ecosystems. These wetlands are to be found in forest vegetation with species-rich flora and fauna characteristic for the Oder region.

Planar part of the area is crossed with many streams, hardly accessible wetlands and lakes, and even reed at illuminated places. In the northern part, there can be found chokecherries and alder swamps with constant water level above the ground, and high sedge vegetation at the edges. To preserve the character of the area it is important to maintain the volatility in the flows of all springs and streams, as well as surface overflows, taking place usually 1 – 3 times a year. Local wetlands are home to many amphibians: the highly endangered Smooth Newt Triturus vulgaris, the European Tree Frog Hyla arborea, the Edible Frog Pelophylax esculentus and the Agile Frog Rana dalmatina. Regarding common species, the Common Frog Rana temporaria can be spotted here quite often.
