Pusté nivy Nature Monument

Basic information

Pusté nivy Nature Monument lies in the right bank of the Oder river, north from the parish Kunín in Poodří Protected Landscape Area. This area, covering 0, 74 hectares, was proclaimed a nature reserve in 1998 in order to protect a unique fragment of alluvial coppice forest, periodically flooded pools and endangered species. A group of massive small-leaved lime trees is found here.

Coppice forest

A coppice forest, also called a low forest or a stump forest, is a forest which is being revived from stumps and root coppices. It has been neither planted nor restored naturally, i.e. by raids. This is the oldest form of forest maintenance. Man has been using the wood coppice abilities to planting wood to make charcoal, wooden tools (handles, sticks), stakes, poles, posts, straw goods, furniture, brooms, carving products, and so on. According to the type of wood, planting aim and the resulting product, the period of the coppice forest growth was determined. From today´s forester´s point of view, this period was quite quick – from 7 years (hazels) up to maximum 30–40 years (oaks). The most frequent wood species of a coppice forest were the following: beeches, oaks, hornbeams, lindens and ash trees, in wet soils also alders and willows.
