Specially Protected Areas in Poodří Protected Landscape Area

Meanders of the Old Oder Nature MonumentLiving nature

Basic information

Meanders of the Old Oder Nature Monument lies on the left bank of the Oder river between Mankovice and Jeseník nad Odrou parishes in the southern part of Poodří Protected Landscape Area. This area, covering 25,96 hectares, was proclaimed a nature reserve in 1999. The territory is a representative example of the gradual succesional development of a section of the Oder river which was artificially cut off from the main flow. The bankside vegetation is of great species and age diversity. The neighbouring meadows are being flooded at least once a year, forming a natural buffer zone. Periodic and permanent pools, located in this annually flooded area, are valuable wetland habitats.

The shore vegetation that grows along the meandering arm of the Old Oder river is particularly valuable. The woods of a so-called hard mead grow here, such as the English Oak (Quercus robur), the Common Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) or the European White Elm (Ulmus leavis). The coppice is formed by the Bird Cherry (Prunus padus), the Small-levaed Lime (Tilia cordata), the Common Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), the Crack Willow (Salix fragilis) and the White Willow (Salix alba). In permanent wet areas of the nature monument, there prevail the Common Alder (Alnus glutinosa) and the Grey Alder (Alnus incarna). Periodical and permanent pools are homes to many amphibian species. On the neighbouring meadows, the highly endangered Dusky Large Blue (Phengaris nausithous) was observed.
