Specially Protected Areas in Poodří Protected Landscape Area

Polanská niva National Nature Reserve - Fauna and flora

Beside amphibians and birds dependent on water there are rare and endangered mammals living in the reserve. Chiropterans are represented by Daubenton’s bat (Myotis daubentoni), Liesler’s bat (Nyctalus leisleri), and Nathusius‘ pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii). Critically endangered water predator otter (Lutra lutra) and European beaver (Castor fiber) live along the Oder River. Thanks to its weight of 30 kg, European beaver belongs to our largest rodents. You can often hear Golden oriole sing its “flute” song or watch numerous forest birds such as tits, creepers, nuthatches or spotted woodpeckers in the forests and hedgegrows.

Large meadow stands make up one third of the area in the reserve. They are irregularly flooded, so-called alluvial foxtail meadows directly attached to river floodplain. Grass of Meadow Foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis) prevails in these meadows. You can watch distinctively blooming flowers of Creeping Crowfoot (Ranunculus repens), Common Comfrey (Symphytum officinale), Cuckooflower (Lychnis flos-cuculi) or Garnet Burnet (Sanguisorba officinalis). Garnet meadows are suitable biotopes for butterflies Maculinea nausithous.
