Specially Protected Areas in Poodří Protected Landscape Area

Polanská niva Nature Reserve - Fishponds

Basic Information

National Nature Reserve lies on the left bank of the Oder River in Poodří Protected Landscape Area in the cadastral district of Polanka nad Odrou. NNR was declared in 1969 on an area of 122.3 ha and lies at elevations of 218 – 220 metres above sea level. The subject of protection is alluvial forests in the Oder river floodplain, rich populations of aquatic plants and irregularly flooded meadow stands with scattered green.

Fishpond network of Polanka is made of 4 upper fishponds. The largest ones are Velký Vaček and Kačírek, the other two are Malý Vaček and Zimní fishpond on whose embankment you are standing right now. There are many critically endangered aquatic plant species on the ponds surrounded by reed beds. Your attention will be immediately caught by leaf rosettes of Water Caltrop (Trapa natans) floating on water and bright green leaves of Floating Fern (Salvinia natans). Among other rare plants that can also be found here we shall mention Brittle Naiad (Najas minor) or Shining Pondweed (Potamogeton lucens).

Tiny Mousetail (Myosurus minimus), Water Dropwort (Oenanthe aquatica) as well as small moss plants are abundant on beds of drained summer-dried ponds. Reed and cattail stands surrounding the fishpond embankments serve as a shelter for many amphibian and water birds species. There are abundant populations of amphibians, especially Marsh Frog (Rana ridibunda), Edible Frog (Rana kl. esculenta), European Tree Frog (Hyla arborea) and Fire-bellied Toad (Bombina bombina) – the subject of protection of the Site of Community Importance in Poodří PLA. The reed stands are nesting sites for our smallest species of heron, the critically endangered Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), severely endangered Garganey (Anas querquedula), or specially protected Great Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus), Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus), Little Grebe (Podiceps ruficollis), Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) and other water bird species.

Iron gates at the embankments were built to regulate the movement of visitors so that the nesting birds and other animals living in this relatively small part of the fishpond network do not get disturbed. The fishponds in Polanská Niva NNR belong to very rare fishpond ecosystems, one of the most significant ones in Poodří PLA. Thank you for your respect and keeping the rule of no entry outside marked paths.
