Polanská niva National Nature Reserve – Alluvial Forests
Polanská niva National Nature Reserve
You are now situated in so-called Blücher´s forest. This large alluvial forest covers almost one third of the whole reserve. It is a frequently flooded alluvial forest with trees of hard wood, called “hard meadow”. The typical woody plants in shrub layer are Small-leaved Lime (Tilia cordata), Pendunculate Oak (Quercus robur), Common Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) and hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) with Bird cherry (Prunus padus) in mixture.
The exceptional richness of herb layer stands out during so-called spring aspect when in March or April large fields of snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) get in full bloom. In May they are exchanged by large carpets of ramsons (Allium ursinum) of them same beauty. Other spring species that occur in great numbers are windflower (Anemone nemorosa), Hacquetia epipactis, Dentaria glandulosa, Gagea lutea, Isopyrum thalictroides and others.
One of the striking features of this forest is a number of fallen trunks and rotten wood that can be found in here. This so-called “dead wood” is left in the forest on purpose. A new living space is thereby created for numerous small animal, plant or moss species and mushrooms. Moreover, the forest is hence getting some typical signs of a primeval forest.
The forest is also noticeable for numerous pools and terrain depressions filled with water. These forest pools are remnants of meandering Oder River which is constantly redirecting its bed in the river floodplain and leaves countless dead arms – pools. Many of protected animals and rare plants find refuge in the pools. To name some we can remember Common Frog (Rana temporaria), a small crustacean Tadpole Shrimp (Eubranchipus grubii) or an aquatic plant Water Violet (Hottonia palustris).
Bear in mind that to enter the forest in the National Nature Reserve outside of marked paths is forbidden by law on nature protection. Please, do not do any harm to nature, thank you.
