The Heřmanský State – Oder River – Poolší Bird Area 2

Heřmanický Pond and its surroundings 10

Basic information

This is a system of ponds in the Oder river floodplain with extensive reed vegetation, situated between Ostrava city, Rychvald and Bohumín parishes. The area consists of five ponds: Heřmanický Pond, Lesník, Záblatský Pond, Figura and New State Pond. Two streams are running through this area – Vrbická and Bohumínská Streams. The brook Bystřinka flows into New State Pond. Heřmanický Pond has been used to retaining saline mine water since 1972. This is related to the specific composition of the pond water which is highly mineralized and contains a high content of iodine and boron. The remaining ponds are managed as fish-ponds. The area is a part of the Natura 2000 Project, Heřmanický Pond is considered being a Site of the European importance. Its area covers 478.9617 hectares and includes all the ponds stated above. The main subject of protection is the Great Crested Newt Triturus cristatus, reproducing in pools with rich water vegetation and in marshes with extensive reeds at the edges of the ponds. The whole area also belongs to one part of Heřmanský the state – The Oder River – Poolší Bird Area, which is situated in the north-eastern part of the Moravian-Silesian region near the Polish border. This area is based upon the Oder river (in the length of cca 10 km) and the Olza river (in the length of cca 16 km) including adjacent river floodplains. Karviná ponds system and the stretch of the Petrůvka river border are connected from the east, pond systems in Rychvald, Bohumín – Záblatí and Heřmanice are connected form the south. The total extent of this bird area covers 3100,8670 hectares.
