White Carpathians - Protected Areas
POD VRCHY
This small-scale protected area hosts the richest population of the Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) in the northern part of the Bile Karpaty (White Carpathians) Protected Landscape Area.
Snowdrops are very popular spring flowers, which people have been plucking, digging up and transferring into their home gardens for a long time. Combined with unsuitable commercial forest management, this practice has led to making the Snowdrop into a threatened species in the Czech Republic.
the Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis)
The undergrowth of the local oak-hornbeam forests is rather rich in species. As a visitor, you can appreciate this especially in spring – at that time the still almost leafless tree tops let through enough light to tease out some early flowering plants including the Wood and Yellow Anemones (Anemone nemorosa and A. ranunculoides), Hollowroot/Bulbous Corydalis and Bird-in-a-Bush/Spring Fumewort (Corydalis cava and C. solida), Hacquetia (Hacquetia epipactis), Solomon's-seal (Polygonatum multiflorum), and Martagon/Turk's cap Lily (Lilium martagon).
