White Carpathians - Protected Areas

POD CIGANEM

This small-scale protected area, some 1.5 south-east of the village of Nedasov, was designated for the conservation of well-preserved pasture, small wetlands, and wood fringe communities with a rich population of the Spotted-orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii subsp. Sooana).

The wet spots are home to the Broad-leaved Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza majalis) and Cottongrasses (Eriophorum sp.), the spring area in the lower part also to the Marsh Arrowgrass (Triglochin palustre) and the treatened Fissidens Moss (Fissidens adianthoides).

After the site had stopped being grazed in the 1970s, it started growing over with shrubs and trees. With the cooperation of the landowner, the scrub has been removed in recent years and mowing (partially also grazing) has been reintroduced. As for orchid species (taking into account both the number of the species in such a small area and the number of plants of individual species) this site is among the best conservation sites in the northern part of the Bile Karpaty (White Carpathians) Protected Landscape Area. It has a good potential for the conservation of the current status and even for some further improvement.

Type of protected area under CZ national legislation: Nature Monument

Managed by: the state, through Bile Karpaty (White Carpathians) Protected Landscape Area Administration

Practical site management: state financed, conducted by local farmers (sub-contracted)
