White Carpathians - Protected Areas

PLOSCINY

This small-scale protected area has been designated for the protection of mountain pastures and close-to-nature forests communities.

When the grazing at Plosciny seized in the 1970s, the pastures rapidly started to grow over with scrub – hawthorn, hazel, birch, and dog rose. In 2000 the shrubs and young trees were cleared and the following year grazing was reintroduced. Thanks to the return of grazing, we can still find some rare orchid species here today – e.g. the Green-winged Orchid (Orchis morio) and Elder-flowered Orchid (Dactylorhiza sambucina).

The forest part of the reserve is interesting for the occurrence of the European Silver Fir (Abies alba).

This tree species is rather sensitive to air pollution and at one point almost disappeared from the forests in the Czech Republic. In the recent years it has fortunately been making (a slow) comeback.

Not far from Plostiny, there is a private nature reserve called “Scurnica” conserving an example of a native “close-to-nature” Carpathian fir-beech forest. This reserve is managed by CSOP Kosenka from Valasske Klobouky – the local branch of the Czech Union for Nature Conservation (= the landowner).
