White Carpathians - Protected Areas
Kutky
This small-scale protected area designated to conserve Carpathian flower meadows is part of the Radejov Hunting Enclosure (Obora Radejov).
Kutky used to be a very valuable site with species-rich White Carpathian meadows with several orchid species and other endangered plants. Unfortunately, since 1989 the area around the reserve has been turned into a hunting enclosure. For hunting purposes, there are herds of European fallow deer and red deer kept here. In the past few years, the numbers of animals have been dramatically increased. This has had a significant effect on the environment – the intensive grazing prevented natural regeneration of the forest stands and grazing combined with trampling degraded also the grassland. Rare plant species suffered also by excessive amount of nutrients added from animal droppings.
This is why the numbers of animals were decreased.
The enclosure is officially open to public all year round with the exception of June and the period between 15th September and 15th November. Visitors are recommended to use marked tourist trail.
Type of protected area under CZ national legislation: Nature Reserve
Managed by: the state, through Bile Karpaty (White Carpathians) Protected Landscape Area Administration
Practical site management: state financed, conducted by the current owner of the hunting enclosure (sub-contracted).
