White Carpathians - Protected Areas
DOBSENA
This small-scale protected area includes a pasture with a spring area on the south-west slope of the Kralovec hill near the town of Valasske Klobouky.
The site is a former pasture (grazed until 1950s). This has been confirmed not only by historic records and local people, but also by the presence of the juniper shrubs (the only shrub species left alone by the grazing animals). After the grazing had been abandoned, the site started to grow over with seedlings from the nearby spruce forest. The discovery of several rare plant species led to the designation of the site a protected area.
The current conservation management consists of regular mowing and thanks to this renewed site management, quite a few plant species have survived here, including the Martagon Lily (Lilium martagon) and several orchid species: the Fragrant Orchid (Gymnadenia conopsea), Pink Globe Orchid (Traunsteinera Globosa), Early Purple Orchid (Orchis mascula), and Elder-flowered Orchid (Dactylorhiza sambucina). In the meadow spring the Marsh Helleborine (Epipactis palustris) and Broad-leaved Cottongrass (Eriophorum latifolium) can be found.
Type of protected area under CZ national legislation: Nature Monument
Managed by: the state, through Bile Karpaty (White Carpathians) Protected Landscape Area Administration
Practical site management: CSOP Kosenka – a branch of the Czech Union for Nature Conservation) based in Valasske Klobouky; includes regular mowing with particular attention to the spring area (hand mowing, biomass removal); state financed, sub-contracted
