White Carpathians - Protected Areas
CERTORYJE
A protected area designated for the conservation of one of the largest complexes of White Carpathian species-rich meadows.
Certoryje is an important botanical site. The meadows are among the most species-rich grasslands in Europe – experts have counted as many as 76 plant species in 1 square metre of the grassland. In total, there are over 500 plant species here. The orchid species at Certoryje include the Late Spider-orchid (Ophrys fuciflora), Pyramidal Orchid (Anacamptis pyramidalis), and Military Orchid (Orchis militaris). Other interesting species are e.g. the Gladiolus Gladiolus imbricatus and Hungarian Saw-wort Serratula lycopifolia.
In the past, the biodiversity was significantly decreased by excessive use of fertilizers. The nature conservation efforts aim at a return to a more favourable status.
Type of protected area under CZ national legislation: National Nature Reserve
Managed by: the state, through Bile Karpaty (White Carpathians) Protected Landscape Area Administration
Practical site management: state financed, conducted mainly by CSOP Bile Karpaty – a local branch of the Czech Union for Nature Conservation; includes clearing of scrub, regular mowing with particular attention to the small wetlands (hand mowing, biomass removal), occasional removal of the dead solitary trees, and planting new trees
