White Carpathians - Protected Areas

BAHULSKE JAMY

This small-scale protected area was designated to protect species-rich meadows on the Lesna hill (696m).

The site makes the impression as if somebody had dug a lot of holes in the ground and piled the earth into mounds – hence the name Bahulske jamy (jamy = pits, hollows). They are not manmade, however, but resulted from natural geological activity, namely landslips.

The undulating terrain creates diverse living conditions for plants and animals – the hollows retain water, whereas the mounds are dry. This diversity of habitats is one of the aspects contributing to the high diversity of species on White Carpathian meadows.

Type of protected area under CZ national legislation: Nature Monument

Managed by: the state, through Bile Karpaty (White Carpathians) Protected Landscape Area Administration

Practical site management: state financed, conducted by local farmers (sub-contracted)

In the past, the biodiversity was significantly decreased by excessive use of fertilizers. The nature conservation efforts aim at a return to a more favourable status.
