Lime tree at health centre

Basic information

There is a small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) growing behind a health centre in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm. The tree was declared memorable in the year 2000. Its trunk perimeter is 300 cm, its height reaches 18 m. Its estimated age is 80 years. Nowadays, the crown is overgrown by mistletoe, which will have negative impacts on its health in the future. Before being declared memorable, its trunk hollow was roofed and its crown was fixed.

Things to note

White mistletoe is an ever-green hemi-parasitic plant which penetrates crowns of trees where it creates globular clusters. It absorbs water, minerals and carbohydrates from the bark of its host tree hence making it weaker. Mistletoe is spread by birds which feed on its fruits and spread seeds through their bill or by their droppings. To avoid its further spreading is not possible. Although the affected branches can be cut off, the tree can be attacked any time again. Mistletoe is both, healthy and poisonous and there are many myths going about it. In Czech it is closely linked with Christmas traditions.
