Memorable trees of Frenštát and Nový Jičín Districts
Lime tree at Cochlars´
Basic information
There is a small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) growing in a local part of Frenštát pod Radhoštěm called Planiska opposite Záchytka Restaurant. The tree was declared memorable in the year 2000. Its trunk perimeter reaches 265 cm, its height is 20 m. The estimated age of the tree is 200 years. The lime represents a wonderful specimen with a wide spreading crown. Before being declared memorable, it got a treatment by members of Czech Union for Nature Conservation in Valašské Meziříčí in 1999. Dead bark was cleared off, a trunk hollow was roofed and the tree crown fixed.
Things to note
The lime tree is considered to be a Czech national emblem. One of the reasons for that may be the fact that limes would be accompanying people from cradle to grave. Lime wood was used for making furniture, clogs, musical instruments, cradles, as well as tombs. Lime trees were homes for just and good spirits and that is why many people lost in storms were looking for refuge under their branches in belief that a lightening would not strike them. Chains from lime bast were said to have the power to stop a dead man from getting out of its grave. One could also prove someone guilty or innocent using a lime tree. It would be planted upside down with its roots heading to the sky. If leaves started sprouting from its roots, there would be no doubt on innocence of the accused one. The lime tree was designated a national tree in the national revival era thanks to Kollar´s poem called The Daugher of Sláva.
