Memorable trees of Frenštát and Nový Jičín Districts
Lime tree at Záhuň
Basic information
There is a small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) growing on a narrow lane in between a pavement and a heavy traffic road towards Kopřivnice. The tree was declared memorable in the year 2001. Its trunk perimeter is 370 cm, its height 19 m. The tree is a unique solitaire, dominant among the surrounding younger woody plants. Being imposed to quite a stressful environment in close proximity with the road, it has to be protected from any further insensitive interference in its surrounding, especially from any trenches, digging and soil removals. Straight after the tree was declared memorable, the members of Czech Union for Nature Conservation in Valašské Meziříčí initiated its treatment during which dry branches and young sprouts at the trunk were cut off and the crown was fixed.
Things to note
There are two types of a lime tree in the Czech Republic: a small-leaved lime and a broad-leaved lime. Both types grow in the town Frenštát pod Radhoštěm. The limes are long-lived woody plants which can live up to 1000 years. Their blossoms mean important food for bees. Lime honey is usually light or green-yellow and belongs to the highest quality and the most favourite types of honey in our country. Lime blossom is known for its health effects. It is effective against fever, cold (runny nose, coughing, tonsillitis) and infections of digestive system. Lime extracts can be used at any age. They are suitable especially for children. Unlike other herbal teas, lime has a very pleasant taste and that is why children accept it very well.
