Poplar in Frenštát
Basic information
A black poplar (Populus nigra) is growing on the left bank of Lomná brook not far from Tichavský Bridge in the town Frenštát pod Radhoštěm. It was declared memorable in the year 1980. Its estimated age is 250 years. According to Agency for nature protection and conservation, it is the largest specimen of its kind in the Czech Republic. Therefore, it was included in the publication called “In search of memorable trees”. There has been only a torso of the oldest tree to be seen in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm since the autumn 2004. The experts of the Agency for nature protection and conservation had recommended that the tree be cut down and the local Municipality hall under the supervision of a specialised company from Valašské Meziříčí had its branches trimmed and the trunk of the massive tree cut to the height of healthy wood. Thanks to these measures, the precious tree could stay preserved. The tree crown is not as spreading any more. The branches grow from the base of the tree and are rather pressed to its strong trunk. The poplar got green again, high sprouting capacity of this wood was confirmed.

Black poplar belongs to our fast-growing woody plants and creates massive trees with wide crown. Poplar is a dioecious woody plant, which means that there are male as well as female specimens. Poplar is photophilous and needs lots of humidity which it can absorb from high depth through its long roots. It does not like stagnant waters. However, it can resist regular floods very well. The best environment for poplar species are deep, moist sandy or gravel soils. Poplars can stand air pollution well. Black poplar wood is bright, light, soft, flexible and easily chopped. Veneers, plywoods, barrels and boxes were made of it in furniture making. Moreover, it can be used in woodcarving and as a fuel. Its bark is used similarly to a cork. Its leaves were used to feed cattle and oil was pressed from its buds.
