Things to note

There are frequent records of a lime tree in literature, many of which do not come from national revival era when it officially became a Slavic national emblem. As an example we can name Svatopluk Čech´s most well-known and most read cycle of stories “In the Shade of a Lime Tree”. The motif of a lime tree is also present in a fairy – tale drama called “Lantern” written by Alois Jirásek. In Bedřich Smetana´s opera “Libuše” Přemysl is singing a famous aria “Oh, you limes”. The motif of a lime tree can be also found in much older literary pieces. In Ovid´s best-known work “Metamorphoses” Gods answer the wish of an old couple who asks for dying and staying together after death and turn them into trees; Filemón becomes and oak and his wife Baukis becomes a lime.
