Moravian Kopanice

Kopanice Festival in Stary Hrozenkov

The two events from which the contemporary festival has originated took place here in April 1922 (The Czechs and Slovaks Brotherhood Festival) and in 1935 (a big folklore event call The Kopanice Day). The first Kopanice Festival was organized in August 1956, the 50th anniversary one in 2010. The festival is not just a mere presentation of the Kopanice traditions, but also many music and dance groups from Bohemia, Moravia, and from abroad. It is not a typical folklore festival, either, the music ranging from traditional to contemporary, cutting across genres.

Most of the festival events take place in an open air amphitheatre in Stary Hrozenkov, which underwent a reconstruction in 2010. Some side events have been moved to the local culture centre.

In 1957, a pond was built within the festival grounds. On its bank, you can find a small chapel-shrine. Nearby, there used to be an old wooden building, which served as a Customs Guard point during WWII. It later housed a school and was used as a central building and a shop for the local camping ground. The new camping place which has replaced it is a new addition.
