Matters of interest

The Black Poplar, in comparison to its various hybrids, belongs to our local fast growing woods. Wet, mainly alluvial forests and river banks are the tree´s most convenient habitats. It is a wood nettle. The flowers are overhanging catkins, male flowers being shorter than the female ones. The poplar wood is light in colour and weight, soft, flexible and easy to cut. Plies, plywood, boxes and barrels were made from its wood. It is frequently used in carving and also as fuel. Its bark is very close to cork. The poplar leaves were used to feed cattle and oil was made from its buds.
