Matters of interest

The Common Buckthorn is a shrub or a small tree, usually 3 meters high. It is a slow growing tree with hard wood and red core. Its fruits are tiny black stones, used as a laxative in folk medicine (the meaning of its gender name in Czech is „cleansing“). The juice from the fruits mixed with alum was used to make bright green colour. The Common Buckthorn grows at forest edges, meadows and in bushes, most frequently within the altitude of 200 to 400 meters above the sea level.
