Matters of interest

The European Oak is a long-lived tree with a strong trunk and a widespreading crown high up to 40 meters. It can be found mainly in alluvial forests and highlands. It blooms in April and May with inconspicious blossoms. The fruits are called acorns, growing on a 3–7 cm long peduncle. The winter oak is an exception in this species and has acorns without peduncles. Acorns are used in gaming to feed animals. Roasted acorns were used as coffee substitute in the past. Flour and bread was made from acorns in periods of hunger as well. The acorn coffee can be bought in organic food stores, it has high amount of tanstuffs and is coffein-free.
