Matters of interest

Oaks are slow growing long-lived trees with hard wood. The Cornish Oak (Quercus peatraea) and the English Oak (Quercus robur) are the most common oaks found in our area. Oaks are considered to be the symbol of strength, long life and resistance. This tree has a unique position mainly in the Scandinavian mythology, where it is initiated to Thor, god associated with thunder. Connecting oaks with lightning and thunder has its special meaning. Thank to their deep roots that may be connected to underground water, oaks are being struck by lightning more often than other trees. Thus we may quite often witness old trees that – despite the lightning damage – keep on growing.
