The World of Mountain Meadows
Survival of the Fittest
Harsh living conditions on mountain ridges
Only low plants, cringing to the ground to protect themselves against strong wind, grow on the mountain ridge. Nature also equipped alpine plants with an excellent „coat“ for bad weather, consisting of thick hairs and bristles or a wax layer. Snow layer, under which the temperature keeps constant and earth does not frost up, is a perfect protection as well. Plants on the ridges huddle close together. They do not grow separately but form shrublets and thick clusters, which allows them to preserve more warmth. Leathery leaves covered with a thin wax layer, grouping into shrublets and low height are not only a protection against wind and frost, but also agaist drying effects of the strong mountain sun.
