Naučná stezka Zlatý kůň

Karst rock steppes

On the top and on the hillsides of Zlatý kůň are sunny, dry and stony areas with shallow soil. Here and there protrudes the parent rock above the surface, limestone. The dry surroundings is ideal for the development of many steppe plant and animal types. These types come originally from southern Europe and from the territory around the Black Sea. They started to spread in the protected landscape area Český kras after the last Ice Age ended. This territory was sooner, perhaps even fifty years ago, thanks to the pasture of sheep and goats not fully ingrown. Today, pasture returns to this area in terms of protected areas care.
From plants preponderates low grass in this territory, most often furrowed fescue (Festuca rupicola) or dwarf sedge (Carex humilis). In April opens its yellow blooms Potentilla arenaria. The most prominent spring plant is however small pasque flower (Pulsatilla pragensia subsp. bohemica). In May shows its yellow blooms Erysimum crepidifolium. At the beginning of June it is impossible to disregard the feather-like awns of feather grass (Stipa pennata). Violet blue blooms has Squarrose Knapweed (Centaurea triumfettii), pink violet blooms Mother-of-Thyme (Thymus praecox). In the middle of summer blooms here blue Spiked Speedwell (Pseudolysimachion spicatum). Limestone base is convenient for the life conditions of molluscs. Typical for the rock steppes of Český kras is a land snail Granaria frumentum. Grass landscape with no woods around the peak of Zlatý kůň attracts various species of flying insects. Old world swallowtail (Papilio machaon) can be seen quite often. Wide areas of rock steppes suit to the hermit (Chazara brizeis), a threatened species whose population here is one of the last in central Bohemian region is. Quite abundant is here in summer the chalkhill blue (Polyommatus coridon). To the good flyers belong peacocks. Blooms are by bumblebees pollinated. Bees happen to be preys of European beewolf (Philanthus triangulum).
