Along the Vlara Railway

Slavicin - Hradek / The highest point

The train stop in Slavicin is actually located in a once independent village which became part of Slavicin in 1960. Its name is rather long – Hradek na Vlarske draze (Hradek on the Vlara Railway), but it is very unique, as it proclaims its connection to the railway. At 400 metres above sea, the railway reaches its highest point here.

If you would like to visit the town of Slavicin, the green marked tourist trail leading downhill will take you there. The landmark of Slavicin, the St Adalbert church from the 13th century, is the oldest historical building here. St Adalbert (Vojtech) was a missionary, who stayed in this region for some time in 985AD, as part of his mission leading him from Hungary to Moravia. In the cemetery, there is a memorial to 28 US pilots killed in this area at the end of WWII. The Pivecka Forest Park where you can have a rest is dedicated to the local shoe entrepreneur and philanthropist Jan Pivecka.

To see more evidence of the contribution of the US army to the defeat of the Nazis during the WWII in this region, you can visit the Slavicin Museum. One part of the exhibition focuses on the battle which took place on 29th August 1944 in the Slavicin air space. Some of the exhibits – parts of the weapons and bomber and fighter planes of both the US and the German armies – stand as direct yet silent witnesses of the dramatic events that shook the whole country at that time.
