Along the Vlara Railway

Hostetin / Ecological experiment

Hostetin is a small, nice village with a long tradition in fruit cultivation and processing dating back to the 17th century. After several decades of decline, it was picked up again in the 1990s. There is a small apple-juice making factory producing a range of organic juices and syrups. In the garden beyond the plant, you can find a reconstructed drying kiln, where fruit is being dried each year. At the end of September, the village comes alive with an Apple Festival, celebrating apples, crafts, and culture.

For more than 15 years now, Hostetin has been attracting attention as an environmental model projects village. These include a community biomass heating plant, reed-bed sewage treatment system, solar collectors, and environmentally friendly street lighting. Another important project is the Veronica Hostetin Centre – the first public passive house in the Czech Republic, which is run by an environmental non-governmental organization and offers not only a range of educational activities, but also certified accommodation.
