Slepičí vršek Nature Monument
The Slepičí vršek (Chicken Hill) NM is located 0.5 km north of the village of Lužnice. The sand drift has a relatively well-preserved original shape which strikingly rises by 3 to 4 meters above the surrounding landscape. It is a refuge area of the rare psammophilous flora and fauna. Among the flora species, we can find larger stands of the sheep's fescue (Festuca ovina), fineleaf sheep fescue (Festuca filiformis), hard fescue (Festuca brevipila) and wavy hair-grass (Avenella flexuosa) which solidify the loose sand area. The distinctive feature of NM is its psammophilous entomofauna, especially hymenoptera, various solitary bees, red-banded sand wasps (Ammophila sabulosa), spider wasps and ants. As a result of increased supply of nutrients from the other farm lands and thanks to the deposition of atmospheric nitrogen, the herb vegetation and the voluntary tree species grow on the sand drift. Inappropriate communities are removed within the controlled care. The site can be accessed by the public via the road from the village of Lužnice.
