Zahorovice mineral water

Where does it come from?

The Zahorovice mineral water is one of the popular Luhacovice area sodium chloride- and sodium bicarbonate-rich mineral waters. When you are drinking it, its smell and taste may revive some memories – and, just maybe, even here, so far inland, you will hear a distant whisper of the sea…

The water springing to the surface is actually ancient sea water, which had been “conserved” in the bedrock for millions of years. It got trapped in the sandstone cavities sometime during the processes in which mountains on the continents were built in a later period of Tertiary, some 23 to 5 million years ago. The original sea water was gradually enriched with carbon dioxide and mineral substances (e.g. chlorides, iodides, bromides) from the surrounding rocks.

In 1738, the local estate owners, the Serenys, opened a small spa in Zahorovice and even began exporting the mineral water abroad. When the spring was almost dry, the spa was closed. The second Zahorovice spring nearby is still open, however, offering its mineral water to people from the whole area.
