The World of Mountain Meadows

The World of Mountain Meadows

Welcome to the mountains!

Grassy Jeseníky mountains' ridges are in fact a special archipelago. Just climb the mountains and get above the line of 1,300 metres above sea level. You will find yourself in a unusual climatic island, in the world of mountain meadows, where harsh conditions with low temperatures and strong winds prevent trees from growing. This alpine forest-free area allows for the survival of a variety of plants and animals, which don't like forest shade and don't mind long icy winters and short cold summers. When the ancient ice ages ended, they were pushed by the spreading forest up to the mountain peaks or far to the north.

Jeseníky's alpine forest-free area archipelago consists of seven islands. The area from Vysoká hole to Pecný is the largest one, followed by Praděd, Keprník, Vřesník, Mravenečník, Šerák and Červená hora. Total area of the archipelago is more than 10 km2.
