Černé jezero (Black Lake)
Černé jezero (Black Lake) is the largest lake in Šumava; the area of its surface is 18.93 ha, it is up to 40.6 m deep (the maximum depth of the lake is on our side of Šumava) and is situated at the altitude of 1008 m. The distance from the dam to the lake wall is 800 m. It was named after the seemingly black colour of the water in the lake caused by the reflection of the surrounding thick forests. A 330 m high rock wall of the Jezerní hora – Lake Mountain (1343 m) rises over the lake. The stony bed of the lake is covered with a several metres of pollen from the pine trees around that have been deposited here for thousands of years. The dam is reinforced and deep down under the dam a pumped-storage, hydroelectric power station was built in 1929–30 in the valley of the Úhlava river – it is today a national technical monument (the first pumped- storage power plant in Czechoslovakia built by the Škoda Works in Pilsen for ZČE). Černé jezero (Black Lake) inspired many prominent artists, composers and writers – Antonín Dvořák, Jan Neruda, A. V. Šmilovský, J. Vrchlický, A. Heyduk …….. to name just a few And the highlights for biologists – you can find vegetations of rare plants in the lake such as isoetes lacustris or sparganium angustifolium, and arctic-alpine plants on the wall exposed to the north as well as rare species of the invertebrates.. The lake is found in the natural reservation Černé a Čertovo jezero (Black and Devil´s Lakes) (175 ha) declared as early as in 1911 by the owner of this estate at that time – Count Hohenzollern.
