Kojetínské Hills
Quarries above the Straník (390 m)
In an abandoned, flooded quarry along the road from Kojetín to Straník we find another forms of undersea volcanic activity in the lower chalk. Inside the back wall of quarry the olivine tephrites are exposed. More outcrops of volcanic rocks are found in the vicinity:
- On the way to Straník, about 300 m on the left side over the Straník creek there is another abandoned quarry. In the lower part of quarry wall there is uncovered undersea lava pall, eruption of olivine diabase. In its overlying rock, in the taller part of the wall a layer of pyroclasts stands out. These close a contactly thermally transformed fragments of minerals from formation of Těšín-Hradiště.
- In the riverbed of the Straník stream, along the road to Straník, in the unexposed wall and in the riverbed is possible to observe layers of sandstones and claystones, that also close greater or smaller fragments of sedimentated minerals from the formation of Těšín-Hradiště. Volcanic component part here is built by picrit almond-stone.
In the research of local igneous rocks was involved Štefan Weigel (* 1848 Novém Městě n. M., †1924 Žilina), homeland worker who worked as a police sergeant in Suchdol n. O. In his life, he gathered a large collection of rocks and minerals from various localities. Currently, the collection is missing. The quarry has its local name „At The Eye“. Until the fifties of the 20th century, the stone was mined here and used mainly on paved roads in the surrounding villages. GPS: N 49° 33.24008', E 17° 59.06075' Pcr. 1 Contact hornblende.
