Čertovo Jezero (Devil´s Lake)
A glacial lake situated on the southern slope of the Jezerní hory (Lake Mountain) at the altitude of 1030 m, stretches over an area of 10.3 ha and is up to 36.7 m deep, surrounded by primeval spruce forest. Two small brooks feed the lake with water and the brook running out of the lake is called Jezerní potok (Lake brook), which is part of the Regen river catchment in Bavaria, and so of the area which feeds the Black Sea with water. The outflow from the lake is said to „pulsate“ – it is a phenomenon caused by winds. The legend says that the devil drowned here with a stone tied to his tail by a young woman he wanted to take with him to hell. At that time he dug out a glen, where the lake is situated. All kinds of odd figures and gnomes are said to rise to the surface of the lake even today. The owner of this estate – Count of Hohenzollern on the initiative of Hugo Connwentz – the father of modern environmental protection – declared the region around Černé jezero (Black Lake) and Čertovo jezero (Devil´s Lake) a natural reservation in 1911. The area of the whole protected region around Černé jezero (Black Lake) and Čertovo jezero (Devil´s Lake) covers 152 ha. What is in fact the origin of Šumava lakes? Towards the end of the Tertiary when the climate became colder and glaciers were formed from snow drifts on the slopes of hills. When later the glaciers started to gradually melt, they pushed in front of them a lot of stones and gravel which formed massive barriers under the hills – moraine mounds which retained the melting water. The lake is today fed with underground springs as well outside tributary streams..
