Z Velkého Března do Zubrnic

Castle Velké Březno

On the right bank of the river Labe (Elbe), not far from Ústí nad Labem, is one of the most beautiful castles in the Czech Republic, Velké Březno. Even though it has in its name the word ‚velke‘, meaning ‚big‘, it is one of the smallest and youngest feudal buildings in the Czech lands. Its construction from 1842 – 1845 is connected with the aristocratic Chotek family, who owned the land around it until it was nationalised in 1945. The castle's founder, the highest burgrave in the Czech lands, Count Karel Chotek, built his new castle according to the plan of the Viennese builder Foester in the later Austrian Empire style. Afterwards, between 1885 and 1910, his grandson Count Karel Maria Chotek had the castle reconstructed in the New Renaissance style. The result of this reconstruction is a charming castle, which fits elegantly into the natural surroundings of the central Czech highlands. . The beautiful interior of the castle is furnished with period furniture, reminiscent of the lifestyle of the Choteks, when for example composer Ferenc List, who was a good friend of the Count, visited the castle. The Chotek lineage also produced Žofie Chotková, the granddaughter of the castle's founder, who was later the wife of the successor to the Hapsburg throne Francis Ferdinand d'Este and who was killed with him in the Sarajevo assassination of 1914 which touched off World War I. Among the prettiest rooms of the castle is the dancing hall, with an elevated ceiling, hearth, and plaster decorations, the castle library with 7000 volumes, the Oriental and Smoking saloons, the family picture gallery, and the newly opened attic childrens' rooms. Surrounding the castle is an incomparable natural English park, with hundreds of interesting trees and bushes. The castle is frequently host to exhibitions, wedding ceremonies, concerts, and many other intresting seasonal events. A schedule of upcoming events can be found on the official web pages of the castle.
