Štramberský kras

Plaňava

Dazzling white cliff of the Kotouč attracted people's attention from time immemorial and its difference from the vicinity made it a mythic mountain in the minds of people. Already Matthew Tanner, one of the Society of Jesus, put down following rumors related to the Kotouč in his treatise the Mount Olivet in 1704: „People tried really hard to build a castle on the Mount Olivet where stand the St. Crosses at the present time but everything they constructed during a day, was demolished in the night by bad ghosts living in the caves or by God´s will. Because it was not possible to build anything here, people built a stone castle on the nearest hill and that is today´s Štramberk“.
