SOVICE – KOČKA (OWL – CAT)

Not far from Litomerice, on the way from Mostna hora (Bridge Hill), one can find a basalt formation called Sovický vrch (Owl hill) or Kočičí hrad (Cat Castle). This isolated rocky hill, with peak reaching 271m above sea level, really reminds us of a lying cat. The whole foothill is somewhat disturbed from past gravel and basalt mining. Demonstrable settlement originated in the 9th and 10th century, when Sovice was most like used as fortress area. Unfortunately its fortification was completely destroyed due to repeated landslides. There are no markers to the peak on the trail, the best access is to follow a field path from the northeast side. The rock is open to public from Litomerice (Mostná hora) and from Zitenice.
