Zvíkov Castle

The Zvíkov castle is located on the tongue of land above the confluence of the Otava river and Vltava river. The first record on the castle is from 1234 and the final construction was completed by the King Ottokar II of Bohemia. Thanks to its position and a well-considered rampart system, it withstood many incursions and frequent siege. It is an important national cultural monument since 1950. It is referred to as “a king of the Czech castles”. The entrance to the castle leads through the Písecká gate. The castle is also interesting for its tower Markomanka with admirable runic-like inscriptions in which, as the legend says, an evil spirit “Rarášek” resides. This legend inspired Ladislav Stroupežnický, a renowned Czech author, playwright, and dramatist, to write a play called Zvíkovský rarášek.
