Muckov Limestone Quarries

The Muckov Limestone Quarries nature monument is located nearby the village of Černá v Pošumaví, or more precisely, 0.5 km west of the colony of Mucká in the district of Český Krumlov. The subject of the protection is the limestone quarries formed after unusual quarrying (pit quarries with chambers) with impressive rock pillars. The unusual method of quarrying gave rise to the unique formations on the site which today represent the best choice for the underground quarry trips in Bohemia. The separated boards of dolomitic limestone, however, have frequently fallen of the chamber ceilings recently, resulting in the falling-in of the worked-out spaces. For safety reasons, the territory itself is therefore not opened to the public. The site is an important winter area and meeting place of 9 bat species subject to the long-term research. It represents an important botanical site with an occurrence of protected plant species.
