Garnet Rock

The Granátová skála nature monument is located in the centre of the town of Tábor, nearby the right bank of the Lužnice river (below the walls of the town part called „Parkány“). The subject of the protection is a gneissic rock with an occurrence of garnets. The rock stands out as a wedge-shaped outcrop of the igneous rock extending from top to bottom, with an abundance of red garnets of the almandine type (it is used for jewel making in the Orient). The dark garnets are in the rock in the form of crystals and grains which allegedly occurred in the hazelnut size in the past. A part of the rock was quarried and used in building the surrounding houses, roads and footstones.
