Blatec Pond

The Vodňanské Basins, a fish pond system, which also includes the Blatec Pond, can be found near the village of Dívčice, approximately 20 km west of České Budějovice. It covers an area of 103 hectares. The Czech Society for Ornithology built-up an ornithological station here in 1953 and its members perform the bird trapping and ringing in the surroundings. The birds nesting on the edge of the pond include especially the Greylag Goose (Anser Anser), Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) and a variety of duck species. Also an irregular occurrence of the Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) was recorded here. Since mid-90´s of the 20th century, the fish pond is mainly used for fish breeding, especially the carps.
